Break Ups

You marry them and you think
Life’s going to be fine
But that’s not always the true case
As you find out down the line
When they screw you over
Lie and deceive
And then try to pretend
That it would be great if you two could
Remain the best of friends
Yet that is not how it works out
For if you want to stay
A friend with your ex, I suggest
You play fair every day
Be honest, show integrity
In everything you do
Even when you want to split up
Be kind; compassionate too
And think just what you are doing
To the one that you have loved
Put yourself in their shoes for a while
And approach them with kid gloves
Considering how you would feel
If you were in their place
For break ups are quite hard to bear
So tiptoe with much grace
And concede that emotions will
Fly round and round a bit
As hurt subsides and passions cease
To have such a snug fit
And then leave space where it’s needed
Respect your ex and wait
Until they want to speak to you
Until their nerves don’t grate
At just the mention of your name
The smell of aftershave
Or perfume that they recognize
For you’re not there to save
Them from their fate nor control them
Tell them what to do each day
Nor interfere with their lives for
You chose to walk away
And as such you much thus accept
That though you’d like to be
Their friend forever, as you once were
You have to set them free
To live, to learn and love again
To find their own heartbeat
For then in time you may find out
They’ll be prepared to greet
You as a friend and say hello
Maybe even share a brew
But when alls said and all is done
It will be down to you
To handle your relationship
The way that you would choose
How others would also treat you
Then you’ll have nowt to lose!

Bricks and Mortar of Life

In life it’s far too easy
To get hold of some bricks
And build up walls or barricades
Thinking they’ll do the trick
Of blocking confrontation
Keeping the out-group out
In ways that when alls said and done
Do little without doubt

Yet if we use those bricks to lay
A path on which we walk
Together we will learn much more
Can listen and can talk
So that assumptions render none
Judged in a way that they
Will feel abused; misunderstood
Or hurt in any way.

So given half a dozen bricks
A bucket of cement
Use these tools wisely to embrace
A life of good intent
And pave ways forward that ensure
Each opportunity
Considers truth; upholds goodness
And paves integrity

The Old Nag

He married a horse
An old nag of a girl
With bleach blonded locks
And fake sealed in curls
That cascaded her back
To the nape where a brand
Was burnt on her hide
Like a moth to harangue
And express with great bombast
Without saying a word
Her contempt for herself
That was really absurd

And as lamb dressed as mutton
In a fashion of crass
Her ways altogether
Were in essence quite brash
Loud, overstated and awkward
Even ignorant too
Her demeanour horrific
Her ideas of the hue
Of black and of grey
Marred; mean and morose
A woman from the gutter
And for certain just gross

And over the years
He regretted the day
He’d said ‘yes I do’
As his life slipped away
Under thumb to this woman
Who moaned and complained
Airing her opinions
Again and again
But yet he stayed shackled
To this heinous wench
Who’s appearance and being
Was matched by her stench

Second Chance

When marriage goes a little wrong
A cup might take a crash
But when it fails and falls to bits
The heart takes the backlash

And like the cup that smashes up
It bleeds and is shattered
But not in ways as physical
Yet still destroyed; battered

For at the seat of who we are
The core of every one
Emotionally we’re vulnerable
To things that have been done

Translated by the head a top
Steered by neurology
The heart then takes the knocks; the strains
And weeps eternally

Lest that it is what it does unless
A plaster is affixed
When happiness helps heal the wounds
With kindness in the mix

And then the heart will jump for joy
Be blessed and smile anew
The past no longer there to hurt
Saved by love’s great sinew

To live a life of wholesomeness
That gives without a glance
The beat of grace; the stroke of hope
Best known as second chance

The Dating Game

I think it’s time to find a knight
Who knows how to behave
So gallant, kind and quite pleasant
Who smiles and really saves
Each day with thoughts that percolate
The air with weather fair
Who lives for others yet does not
To others then compare

And puts his own ahead the rest
Uplifts them always first
Whilst home is where the heart exists
And love is fit to burst
A knight who’s loyal and honest too
Who doesn’t cheat or fight
Subscribing to autonomy
To let each one shine bright

Who seeks responsibility
Accountable yet free
With true respect for all around
And only eyes for me!
I think it’s time to find a knight
In shining armour true
So on a postcard do apply
If this seems to be you!

Divorce

The energy so static
The air so biting cold
The love between lovers gone
Lost in the days of old

The malice and malevolence
The nastiness and spite
The sheer degree of bitterness
In horrid divorce fight

For he now looks at her
With condemnation cruel
And she regards his being with
Contempt – her surging fuel

With greed now on the table
Where once two hearts were one
But there will be no winners for
This battle can’t be won

And everyone’s a loser when
Such acrimony hits
Such sadness, devastation –
Love thrown into lion pits

I wrote this as I witnessed two adults spatting the other day in public over their financial settlement.  It is so sad when the greatest of love dissolves but sadder still when there is so much hatred and bitterness connected to it and no more so than when money is lighting that fire.

I Bid You Forgiveness

Your words chafe my soul as if with a knife
That plunges its blade in my heart
Such opinions bite hard and hand out more pain
Such judgement overwhelms to depart
Your prejudice sears like a third degree burn
Discriminating you purge any calm
Your venomous anger and sharpness of tongue
Takes joy from my life to do harm

But my prayer goes to you with openness whole
To wish so deep peace safe to say
To trust that you’ll find the contentment you yearn
With compassion and love on the way
Save understanding and hope that wells up from the seat
Of being at one after all
I bid you forgiveness and pray you’ll move on
Renewed by life’s fresh waterfall

The fresh waterfall washing over with grace
To heal like a balm; to release
To inspire and create a subscription to love
With empathy and so to with peace
And I pray you will drink from these waters again
Lest your words may drain life right away
And hope you’ll encapsulate freshness anew
To shine out pure goodness each day
