In loving memory of my Father on his birthday

Reflections

For fifty years less one short month
You’ve been there by my side
Protector, comforter and friend
In whom I could confide
With whom I shared my highs, my lows
My hopes, my loves, my dreams,
My fears and sadness, losses, fights
All sort of diff’rent things

You’ve stood there strong; n’er waned nor left
Been there through thick and thin
My constant, stable, quiet resolve
Hand to hold and thickest skin
And we’ve had great fun, laughed and cried
We’ve shared so much and more
And you’ve been there not just for me
But for my own fab four

You’ve been the very best of Dads
And for my children too
You’ve been a role model as well
As Grandpa and Dad, true
You’ve taught us all integrity
You’ve showed us what it means
To uphold honour, truth, respect
And all things in between

And you taught me that I have worth
You’ve shown me I can be
Strong, confident, navigating
A lifecourse responsibly
For as a source of peacefulness
With humour and harmony
You’ve given out support, warmth, love
All unconditionally

And so dear Daddy, I love you
And will eternally
For though we must be pulled apart
In mortal realms I see
This thread weaving between us won’t
Separate at your death
For it will pass cross the chasm
And won’t leave me bereft

A ribbon thread to hold onto
Forever in a day
Of treasured memories in mind
Paving an onward way
A link in the chain that won’t be broke
A strand between us both
Where what we had will never die
And that’s my lasting oath
And thus, this will not be the end
But the beginning of
A new road down which we will walk
Me here; you up above
As a star amidst the milky way
Shining a guiding light
Still always here deep in my heart
Burning so very bright

Dear Dad …

Things may have changed in recent times
Evolved into a new
But I see past the ageing parts
To the twinkle deep in you

To the heart within that beats with care
And love that you have shared
The kindness deep within that you
Have shown, is always there

The stable unconditional
Hug that’s enveloped me
Through life – through good and bad you’ve been
A star Dad constantly

A star that’s shone a leading light
With a glow that lasts each day
Unceasingly encouraging me
Giving guidance on the way

And too you’ve been a role model to
Your grandchildren as well
A beacon in their lives that too
Shines out in ways that tell

And so dear Dad and Grandpa too
Be sure we love you so
For with heartfelt thanks and gratitude
You’re the best Dad that we each know!

Best Of The Bestest Dads

A day to celebrate the men
Who give their hearts and all
Imbue love unconditionally
That kick about the ball
Of daddy-hood to be the best
That they can truly be
In sacrifice to their offspring
Throughout all history

Who put themselves out to protect
The lives that they have made
In love with full integrity
That’s shown by what’s displayed
And given to their babies
That says ‘I’m here it’s true
And will be to the end of time
As I’ll always love you’

And to those men a hearty cheer
A glass raised up to say
That Dad’s like you are drops of gold
And always win the day!
For any man can be a father
But it takes a special lad
To go on to make the cut as the
Best of the bestest Dads

Dedicated to my Dad on this Father’s Day who, for sure, made the cut

The Cloud That Masks The Sun

My Dad left us when I was young
I knew not what to do
He said that life was sad for him
To stay right there with you

He said the past had been real bad
Like treading on eggshells
That there was more for him out there
Than staying in this hell

He said there was another Mum
Much better than my own
That she was such a nice person
A new Mum to be known

He said he’d still be there for me
“I’m still your Dad, you know”
But how could he hate Mum so much?
Why did he have to go?

I simply needed just one thing
For Mum and Dad to be
Together now and to recall
That they had BOTH made me

I wanted all the pain to go
For peace – stability
To see the sun come out and shine
For some tranquillity

I needed time to contemplate
To find myself again
I needed space to chill a bit
For I was only ten

I needed time to understand
To try and fathom out
Why adults do these horrid things
That mean they then walk out

I wanted life to carry on
Just like it was before
I wanted unconditional love
To walk right through the door

I didn’t want to hear from Dad
What I should think and do
I wanted him to put me first
And be quite contrite too

But that just didn’t quite pan out
He didn’t hear me say
Why I was sad and what I felt
What hurt me on that day

He just made up his own version
Of events to overcome
His despondency and sense of guilt
The things that made him glum

And so we parted company
It broke my heart in two
For all I needed him to say was
“We’re still both here for you!”

And so the story carries on
A man without his son
And son without his father there
The cloud that masks the sun

Parental Alienation occurs usually due to divorce or separation where a child expresses unjustified dislike or hatred towards the other parent.  This often results in access to the rejected parent being impeded and restricted unnecessarily and is often said to have occurred due to the negative influences of the non-rejected parent most commonly the parent who the child resides with.  However, on occasions it can be the other way round with the rejected parent causing the situation through their own negativity.  The term does not apply in child abuse cases where the rejection is the result of a child protecting themselves.  The call therefore needs to go to all parents in a split to put aside personal differences, to honour an ethos of love, respect and responsibility for their child to embrace the fact that their children have a dual parentage heritage so that children do not lose contact with either parents in this situation.  For further reading you might like to visit http://resetparenting.com/2012/06/08/paternal-alienation/
