STE(A)M (Haiku)

Where STEM becomes STEAM
Pushing back the frontiers of
Science artfully

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) is a buzz word in education which sadly excludes the Arts and will no doubt go down as one of the biggest mistakes of our time as future generations are not afforded the opportunity at school to embrace their creativity with open mindedness, seeking out the answers to some of the biggest questions we face or develop the capacity to think outside the box. For Art is all this and more and should be on the same page as the STEM subjects to enable the driving force that is STEAM.  To this end, this little haiku is dedicated to this.

If Music Is The Food Of Love

If music is the food of love
Then words will also be
The rhythm of an inner soul
That’s beats so wild and free

The metre of a heart’s desire
Expressions vent so true
Transcending destiny and life
As lexicon imbue

The passion of sweet harmonies
That dwell within so pure
And cadence of life’s symphony
Cross staves that dance for sure

The tonic of all emphasis
That swells to thus define
That music as the food of love
Tangos with words entwined

If Music Be The Food Of Love

Sonnet To The Bard

Shakespeare, poetic prince with priceless crown
From age that’s gone yet still imprints on me
The bard, the playwright, son of Stratford town
Words eloquent for all eternity
Where time has no beginning and no end
The alpha and omega of such verse
That goes before to now so greatly penned
Across the literal sea and universe
But not esteemed throughout his own short life
That spanned just five decades and then two years
A man who countered academic strife
Yet now as national poet is revered
Still ghost of Shakespeare haunts the world’s huge stage
As man with many parts survives the age

This was long thought to be the only portrait ...

This was long thought to be the only portrait of William Shakespeare that had any claim to have been painted from life, until another possible life portrait, the Cobbe portrait, was revealed in 2009. The portrait is known as the ‘Chandos portrait’ after a previous owner, James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos. It was the first portrait to be acquired by the National Portrait Gallery in 1856. Celebrity? Famous?

Celebrity? Famous?
Nah give me normality
The space to really be myself
Where no-one peeks to see
The everyday – the mundane things
That I do in my life
Like shopping for a pint of milk
Without the stress and strife
Of dressing up – make up done
For scrutinizing eyes
That then capture your every move
To photo; analyse!

Celebrity? Famous?
Nah give me normality
For life just isn’t all about
The fast lane; bright lights to see
But more so bout the this and that
The people that I meet
Without the stress of others glare
That then make their critique
The quest to live and to enjoy
But at a pace that’s right
So keep me in the shadows and
For me I’ll then shine bright!

If The Cap Fits

If the cap fits then please wear it
Though cautioned as you do
To understand that you will then
Take any blame that’s due

And akin to Cinderella
If slipper fits as well
Whatever mask you might then wear
Such fitting rings the bell

Or in the case of fingerprints
When image matches up
Admit that you were in the frame
And drank from guilt stained cup

For throughout our lives we walking so
Indelibly with tracks
That leave a trail of suggestion
To fill in all the cracks

So be sure to first acknowledge
If you have hidden guilt
For by your words and actions sure
The truth will then be built

And all will then unravel full
Right there before your eyes
Exposing just where you have been
Despite any disguise.

Poetic Neuroscience

I swear my mind is starting to
Tick right along in time
And run around so crazily
To beat in constant rhyme
And by some wild plasticity
The constant use of verse
Has flicked a switch to overload
And fire up to converse
Through synapses now metrical
That bridge from A to B
With words that rhyme in perfect time
Acting potentially

5 A Day

I really can’t help thinking
Our obsession all the way
With blackberry and apple gadgets
Tots up our five a day

For in our drive to stay so healthy
We are told we must consume
At least five lots of fruit and veg
For well being then to bloom

But of course we’re also told
What consumers we’ve become
So let’s shout it out for 5 a-day
And electronic fruit – yum! yum!
